Brutally honest reviews and commentary on the latest music
Album: Broken Compass
Genre: Hard Rock
Release Date: 16 September 2014

Diagnosis: This album puts to sleep. Is that what they were going for with their band name? Sorry, I had to. It was too appropriate. There’s seriously nothing interesting to listen to here. I was never an Underoath fan, so I didn’t come in expecting lots of screaming and was disappointed as a result. I had a positive association to Underoath, so when I heard that their former singer, Spencer Chamberlain, started Sleepwave I was expecting something decent at least. Instead what you got here is a band that seems to be deliberately stripped of everything that could possibly be interesting. This is a something you would give a middle-schooler to listen to because they’ve never listened to rock before and they need to be introduced to it gently. There’s some electronic elements to the music, but it doesn’t do anything for them. It just feels like filler for the lack of instrumental depth.
The Highlights: “The Wolf” has some aggression to wake you up from this boring album and “Whole Again” has a cool synth-heavy intro before returning to their tiring formula. This isn’t even to say they’re good songs. They’re just not totally lame like the rest of them.
Final Thoughts: I’m not sure what else to say. I’d much rather listen to Flyleaf’s new album than this, which is saying something. This album is really shallow and totally devoid of emotion.
Score: 2 out of 10
